Once a year, at a park in downtown Tokyo, Japanese men line up to shout phrases of love to their wives. In their own interpretation of Valentine’s day, men line up and wait hours for their turn to stand on a stage in a televised event and shout their love and appreciation for their wives.
Phrases were heard such as “I love you!” “Stay with me forever!”
Many of the wives were crying as they watched their husbands proclaim their love. The men said they felt their heart pumping and felt completely energized afterward.
The entire event, (aptly named) “Love Your Wife Day” was started by a Japanese businessman Kiyotaka Yamana when his own marriage failed. In the Japanese culture, the men work many long hours and don’t get the chance to be as romantic as they wish, Yamana created the event to showcase love as a vital part of marriage in Japanese culture.
Taking the time out to really appreciate their partners and all of the little things that may go unnoticed or unacknowledged is really what Yamana was trying to accomplish with this event. Material gifts are wonderful, but the intangible profession of love is sometimes all that you need in order to get through a rough patch.
Besides, it saves them a fortune in flowers and candy.
